Vivienne has published more than 100 articles and book chapters about her work, including for a book intended for a wider audience Geweld door vrouwen- Motieven en verklaringen (Violence by women - Motives and explanations). She has also developed various risk assessment instruments. She is particularly interested in research that is of direct practical relevance.
Apie paskaitą:
The past three decades, empirical knowledge about violence risk assessment has grown tremendously and violence risk assessment instruments have gained widespread use in different settings and contexts, mostly in forensic mental health and correctional settings. Notwithstanding the major improvements, there remain important challenges with respect to the use of violence risk assessment tools in clinical practice. For instance, more knowledge is needed about the role of protective factors, adequate implementation of tools in clinical practice, the use of tools in specific groups (e.g. women, ethnic minorities, mental disabilities), risk formulation and into the translation of risk assessment results into risk management strategies. Furthermore, more attention is warranted for adequate risk communication and how the results are understood and used by decision-makers.
In the Netherlands, structured violence risk assessment has become mandatory to use in forensic mental health care in 2005. In this presentation, I will provide an overview of how risk assessment is implemented and used in a Dutch forensic psychiatric hospital, the Van der Hoeven Kliniek. In this hospital, risk assessment was implemented in 2001 and since then, several new tools were developed (e.g., the SAPROF for the assessment of protective factors and the FAM for violence risk assessment in women) and multiple studies were conducted. Recent research results on the HCR-20 Version 3, FAM and SAPROF will be discussed. The importance of using these guidelines for forensic treatment and risk management will be illustrated with a clinical case study. Finally, practical guidelines for implementing and conducting violence risk assessment in routine clinical practice will be provided.
